24-Feb-2012
Breaking away from conventional stereotypes, the Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Cookin’ Men Fundraiser brought together 28 local community and business leaders, all men, to cook for an audience of more than 200. The first time event raised approximately $22,500 to benefit Memorial Hospital’s obstetrics and pediatrics departments.

According to Don Nalley, member of the Memorial Hospital Foundation Board , who co-chaired the Cookin’ Men Event, with Kay Reiter, Executive Director of Sandusky County Economic Development Corporation, indicated the event was a huge success. “In addition to being a successful fundraiser, Cookin’ Men engaged local community and business leaders in an environment of support for Memorial Hospital,” he said. “The ‘man-made’ dishes were surprisingly very good.”
Some of the dishes included chicken and sausage gumbo, prepared by Scott Farrell, M.D.; Fremont Clam Chowder, made by City of Fremont Mayor Jim Ellis; venison jalapeño sliders, grilled by Aaron Opelt, Sales and Marketing Representative for Crown Battery; and Italian sausage and peppers, cooked by Leonard Reino, president/CEO of Reino Linens; as well as many other fine cuisines.
The over 200 attendees at the event, which was held at The Heights Banquet Hall at American Legion Post 121 in Fremont, had the opportunity to sample each culinary delight, as well as bid on various silent auction items that were donated by businesses in the Memorial Hospital service area. Terra State Community College’s Jazz Combo entertained guests throughout the evening.
“Cookin’ Men was a first-class fundraiser,” added Nalley. “The Memorial Hospital Foundation Board and the hospital’s pediatrics and obstetrics associates are tremendously appreciative of the dedicated corporate sponsors and the strong community support that made this event a success.”
Some of the major corporate sponsors of Cookin’ Men included; P.T. Services & Rehabilitation, Inc., Reino Linen Services, American Legion – Fremont Post 121, Crown Battery, and Mosser Construction, Inc. The event was open to the public and sold out several weeks before the event.
The Memorial Hospital Foundation supports the projects of the hospital by raising funds from the community through events, annual campaigns, capital campaigns, memorial and honoree giving, and planned giving.
